On Monday, Katie helped James with an Easter project.
They took a small clay pot, turned it on its side and covered it with wet soil.
Then they patted grass seed into the hill...
and added stones around the pot's opening. The dish that goes with the pot was used to cover the opening of the pot. It serves as the stone over Jesus' tomb.
Three crosses made from sticks glued together finished the Hill of Calvary.
While we are on the subject of James and building things, he also designed this home to be built into the side of a mountain. Here is the front of the house.
Here is the garage opening.
The back of the house.

Can't you just see in on the side of a mountain?
Another Frank Lloyd Wright, perhaps?
Sugar Easter Egg
Katie made her own Sugar Egg from scratch this year.
Geography
We learned about New Jersey this week...
and completed a page for our Geography album.
We also made blueberry muffins because it is one of the crops from the Garden State.
History
We followed Lewis and Clark over the Rocky Mountains...

| Nez Perce horse forehead decoration activity from History Pockets: Native Americans |
and learned about the Nez Perce Indians.
We also learned about how Ben Franklin charted the Gulf Stream and experimented with sound.
Science
We also experimented with sound waves,
and watched them move things.
It is so nice to see Katie teaching her brothers things like tricks for dying Easter eggs.
Math
We made a greater than/less than alligator, which made learning that math concept more fun and more memorable.
What We Have Been Reading
We have been reading Diary of an Early American Boy, Noah Blake, 1805,
which goes nicely with our study of Lewis and Clark, as it is the same time period. It weaves factual information about how they lived and wonderful diagrams with a little story of Noah Blake's life as written in his diary. James, especially, is loving it.
We are also continuing The Little House series. The boys have also been watching the television series.
