Snapshot Summary September 13-19
Monday: Mostly math day. We looked at patterns in fruits and vegetables and sketch some of them and then painted them with watercolors. Quentin and James worked on their word problems. Sam reviewed adding and subtracting fractions.
Wednesday: Today was our mostly Fine Arts day. We completed our first picture study of the Limbourg Brothers' painting March. Afterwards we made chalk pastel pictures. I had been meaning to do chalk pastel lessons from the tutorials at Homeschool Highlights for quite a while now but never seemed to be able to fit it in. Today seemed to be the day for it. We started with a field and barn at twilight... the moon has risen, but it is still some daylight. Alex absolutely loved this project. He smiled the whole way through it and seemed very pleased with his work. He was able to do almost everything himself. I just had to hold his paper some and outline the barn in black for him. I couldn't seem to explain to him what I meant for him to do, and he didn't pick up on it when I demonstrated it. He understood everything else, which is great. James enjoyed making Van Goghesque clouds around and over the moon.

Thursday: Calisthenics on the front porch and then reading, writing and spelling through games at the table and on computer, through reading to each other. Learning from the alphabet to Beowulf and all in between, one step at a time. After lunch, a trip to the library to get more books and other fun (puzzles, coloring and huge stuffed toys, to name a few.) We, of course, had to check out the library's garden to see the changes brought by fall. On the ride home a sudden and violent thunderstorm comes up, with lots of wind and great drops of water but soon we were home and cozy and dry with books.
Friday: Our mostly science day was filled with lots of experiments centering around the differences between physical and chemical changes. It is hard for me to decide which of these two experiments caused the most excitement. The peroxide and yeast experiment caused an interesting foamy reaction, but the root beer floats were one of the yummiest of the experiments. (The peanut brittle wasn't bad, either.)
Katie and Alex also planted radishes today. Spicy black bean soup and Tiger bread for dinner.
